Getting started
You will first of all have to apply for a provisional driving licence unless you have been riding a motor cycle when your current licence might also act as a provisional licence for cars. To check this go to www.direct.gov.uk

You may apply for a provisional licence up to three months before your seventeenth birthday although it will not become valid until you are seventeen.

To apply for a licence you will need to complete a D1 application form which you can obtain from the post office or order on line from www.direct.gov.uk the current fee for a provisional licence is £34.00 online (or £43.00 via post).

Your licence will normally be with you within three weeks from application but may arrive quicker than this.

Please be sure to check and double check your application and make sure all the additional requirements are with the application before sending. We would also recommend sending the application by recorded delivery as you will also be sending personal information with the application for example one of the items could be your passport.

There are some new security measures on licences and one for instance is that your photograph is now etched onto the licence rather than stuck on.
